Zander

Zander - Sander lucioperca also known as sander or pikeperch.

Conservation status

Zander is the largest member of the Percidae family (which also includes Perch). It is a species of ray finned fish found in fresh and brackish water.

According to the IUCN pikeperch are abundant and widespread with a stable population. It is listed as of Least Concern as no major threats have been identified although overfishing is a concern in some areas.

Overview
Zander were originally introduced to Britain in 1878. They live in rivers and canals and can be found in coastal lakes and estuaries. They thrive well in murky water with poor visibility. The male of the species is responsible for guarding the eggs and nest. It is a very valuable fish for food and is commercially significant. In Europe there are a growing number of aquaculture facilities which produce zander for human consumption or for stock
